@iluvprady yeah totally, I did that with my e36, but with a car like this one I like the added peace of mind of having a fuse back there. Its all preference. If you do go that route, splice into the? leads so as to not damage the actual lighter itself. You could get an inline fuse from home depot/lowes I suppose and it would do the same thing.

Reply To: Hard Wire Nav, Radar, GPS, phone the BMW 5 seriesiluvprady says:March 3, 2012 at 8:00 am

@ReaganSmash3000 is there a way to directly hardwire it to the car’s inbuilt cigarette lighter and avoid going to the fuse box? I was wondering if i can splice the charger? and connect the +ve and -ve to the back of car charger or something…

Reply To: Hard Wire Nav, Radar, GPS, phone the BMW 5 seriesiluvprady says:March 3, 2012 at 8:13 am

yeah? im sorry with splitters i meant cigarette lighters which u bought…

Reply To: Hard Wire Nav, Radar, GPS, phone the BMW 5 seriesReaganSmash3000 says:March 3, 2012 at 8:45 am

@iluvprady I’m not really sure what you mean by “splitters”
but it runs like this: Fuse box > lead > Cigarette lighter(s) > Car Charger >? Phone Dock

Reply To: Hard Wire Nav, Radar, GPS, phone the BMW 5 seriesiluvprady says:March 3, 2012 at 9:18 am

So the direct lead from the? fuse box was connected to the splitters and dock wires were connected to the car charger and then u connected the car charger to the splitter. Am i right?

Volvo Trucks has announced that its Volvo Enhanced Cruise (VEC) with Active Braking– which provides full-time active braking– will now be offered on all new Volvo VN series highway tractors ordered with VEC. Previously, trucks equipped with VEC provided active braking only when the vehicle’s cruise system was engaged.

Advertisement Related article Volvo Trucks Safety Award seeking candidates Volvo Trucks Safety Award back for 2012 Volvo re-ups with America’s Road Team

According to Volvo, VEC with Active Braking utilizes a radar sensor, inset behind the front bumper, to help maintain a safe following distance from slowing vehicles and identifies stationary objects in the truck’s path. The active braking system provides full-time object detection and integrated visual feedback on the instrument panel and driver information display, audible warnings and braking intervention to help reduce the potential or severity of a crash. If braking intervention becomes necessary, the system will reduce the engine throttle, apply the engine brake, and when needed, apply up to two-thirds the brake power.

“Active Braking provides valuable situational information and helps professional drivers take preventative measures to avoid hazards,” said Frank Bio, Volvo Trucks product manager – trucks. “Volvo’s integrated approach to active safety technologiesprovides the unique advantage of being able to set the warning hierarchy and present the most important warning or warnings to the driver.”

Volvo Trucks is also offering a Lane Departure/Driver Alertness Warning System, which provides audible and visual alerts during unintentional deviation from the driving lane or drowsy driver characteristics. The system combines a windshield-mounted camera, sophisticated vision software, processor and power supply into a compact and robust unit that’s integrated with the warning hierarchy established on all Volvo vehicles, noted the OEM.

“The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) attributes human error as the cause of more than 90% of all truck-involved crashes,” Bio said, citing FMCSA’s Large Truck Crash Causation Study. “Active safety technologies that provide driver warnings and take corrective action play a vital role in helping to avoid accidents, while continuing to help drive the strong downward trend in truck-involved crash rates.

“Volvo has long been recognized as a global leader in safety, but many motorists may not realize the Volvo trucks they see on highways feature active safety technologies that can help reduce the potential or severity of an accident, very similar to those equipped on their own passenger vehicles,” added Bio.

Since 2005, Volvo Trucks has offered Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology as standard equipment on all VN series highway tractors and as an available option on VHD vocational trucks. The full electronic stability program assists the driver in maintaining control during emergency maneuvers and braking events, dramatically reducing the likelihood of a rollover, jackknife or loss of control. VEC, introduced in 2009, provides advanced collision avoidance while the truck’s cruise control is engaged. VEC allows professional drivers to maintain a designated speed while also maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles.

Higher fuel prices, upward pressure on driver pay and a suddenly more sluggish freight market are creating more challenges for the trucking industry? challenges that may continue to build as 2012 progresses.

Trucking challenges keep on piling up

?There?s still a lot of general uncertainty facing carriers,? Mike Mulqueen, senior director for product development at Manhattan Associates, told Fleet Owner.

?Fuel prices are more volatile and rising back near the high levels of four or five years ago and [carrier] fuel surcharges are not covering all of that, especially when it comes to empty miles and idle time,? he said.

David Parker, chairman, president, & CEO of truckload carrier Covenant Transportation noted in the company?s year-end earnings report noted that diesel prices as measured by the Dept. of Energy averaged approximately 73 cents per gallon higher in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared with the same period in 2010 ? an increase of 23.3%.

?We plan to continue managing our idle time and truck speeds, investing in more fuel-efficient tractors to improve our fuel miles per gallon, using fuel hedges from time to time to reduce our exposure to rapid increases in fuel prices, and partnering with customers to adjust fuel surcharge programs which are inadequate to recover a fair portion of rising fuel costs,? Parker said.

That?s just one of many factors Manhattan?s Mulqueen said are ?completely out of trucking?s control.? Others include the ongoing impact of regulations, such as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration?s CSA program, along with emission and fuel efficiency mandates promulgated by the Environmental Protection Agency.

?In the case of CSA, we?re finding that there are higher numbers of citations in certain geographic regions,? Mulqueen said. ?So a carrier can suddenly find itself facing higher scores based on where it’s operating that week ? and shippers are incorporating those scores into the [freight contract] bidding process.?

On top of that, the U.S. economy remains in the doldrums, despite several positive developments, including a decrease in the nation?s overall unemployment level this January.

For example, a recent survey by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) indicated that optimism barely budged among small businesses last month, despite January?s employment figures.

NFIB said its Small Business Optimism Index rose just 0.1 points in January, settling at 93.9. While the increase marks five consecutive months of improvement, the readings from January and February 2011 were actually higher, thus indicating no net gain for the calendar year.

While small business owners appeared less pessimistic about the outlook for business conditions and real sales growth, that optimism did not materialize in hiring or increased inventories plans, noted NFIB chief economist Bill Dunkelberg.

?The most positive statement that can be made about January?s reading is that the Index did not go down; a change of 0.1 points is essentially no change and it is hardly indicative of a surge in economic activity,? Dunkelberg said. ?Nothing happened last month that would significantly improve the small business outlook. That the Index remains below its level a year ago of 94.1 means no progress was made in 2011.?

A retrospective on the last 12 months of the NFIB Index suggests that for small-business owners, 2011 was a flat year, he added, and January?s reading indicates that the U.S. economy will continue to crawl along at a slow and weak pace.

Specifically where trucking is concerned, the ongoing shortage of drivers continues to create multiple issues for the industry. However, Manhattan?s Mulqueen stressed that not all carriers are being affected equally by it.

?It?s a bifurcated situation where drivers are concerned,? he explained, ?because private fleets don?t have a shortage; it?s an easier and better paying job compared to the typical long-haul over the road position.?

As a result, many for-hire carriers are increasing driver pay ? but are doing so at a time when other business costs are also on the rise, pointed out Covenant?s Parker.

?We experienced pressure on expenses in several areas,? he said. ?Salaries, wages and related expenses increased approximately 3.8 cents per mile in the fourth quarter of 2011 due to driver pay adjustments since the fourth quarter of 2010, along with higher worker compensation expense.?

Parker also noted that operations and maintenance expenses increased approximately 1.7 cents per mile in the fourth quarter last year compared with the fourth quarter of 2010 primarily because of inflationary pressures related to tires and vehicle parts and additional maintenance completed when trucks experienced lower utilization.

?Other [cost] factors that impacted our results included higher insurance and claims expense and less effective absorption of fixed costs due to lower freight revenue per tractor,? he noted.

As a result, Covenant lost $14.3 million in 2011, even though total revenue increased 0.4% to $652.6 million over 2010. This happened in a year in which the company posted profits of $3.3 million. In particular, Covenant said freight revenue decreased 6.3% to $512.0 million in 2011.

Still, Manhattan?s Mulqueen believes the trucking industry is in many ways more robust today due to coming through the ?Great Recession? and is thus better positioned to deal with upcoming challenges.

?For a time there, carriers were just trying to survive ? and a lot of carriers got culled from the ranks,? he explained. ?Those that remain, however, know the business issues and know the problems this industry faces. They have learned and continue to learn how to operate more efficiently and effectively.?

Meritor Wabco: System enhancements keep safety in focus

?Meritor Wabco has a legacy of being first-to-market with breakthrough safety innovations,? said Jon Morrison, president of Meritor Wabco.  ?These latest products demonstrate that we?re going to continue that leadership position by continuously developing fully integrated, cost-efficient systems that save lives and improve performance.?

        The new initiatives:

A strategic alliance with Takata to market their SafeTraK Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Warning system as well as a supporting driver-alertness warning system Roll Stability Support (RSS) 1M to provide trailer anti-lock braking with the added benefit of stability control New electrically controlled air dryer technology that optimizes duty cycles by improving timing to increase efficiency System Saver 1200 Plus air dryer enhancements that provide application flexibility and capability for additional weight savings

The vision-based SafeTrak system monitors the road ahead and audibly warns drivers if they unintentionally depart from a lane or the road. The  LDW system alerts drivers of weaving, lane drifts or lane changes that occur without a turn-signal application by detecting and classifying lane markers on the road through a fully integrated, compact unit.

The Takata unit is composed of a camera, optics, processor and a power supply that assist in tracking and projecting the lane ahead. Installation and setup is simple. The system automatically calibrates itself using the unit?s integrated diagnostics and can be installed directly on the vehicle?s windshield in less than an hour.

Roll Stability Support (RSS) 1M is a two-sensor, one-modulator system that Meritor Wabco said completes the industry?s most diverse offering of trailer safety systems to provide the benefits of both ABS and trailer stability control integrated into a single compact unit.

The risk of rollover from driving actions, including collision avoidance maneuvers; sudden lane changes and acceleration in a curve, can be mitigated or prevented as a result of the RSS 1M, said the company, thereby assisting the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle.

The system automatically accounts for the load status and calculates lateral acceleration while driving. If the lateral acceleration exceeds a specific value, low pressure check brake applications are applied. If the system detects a potential rollover during the brake check process, a full brake application is put into effect. BCO RSS 1M is derived from the RSS 2 M system that has been available to fleets nine years.

The System Saver 1200 Plus, developed specifically for North American braking systems, is a high-capacity, spin-on air dryer that utilizes internal air for regeneration. By incorporating the wet tank and adding a drain valve, it allows customers to have one less reservoir in the system, ultimately saving space and vehicle weight, said Meritor Wabco. With an integrated re-gen, wet tank and governor drain valve in one lightweight, compact unit with 1200 cc of premium desiccant, it ?sets the standard for air drying performance, service life and replacement time, lowering vehicle cost of ownership,? added the compant.

Designed to lower operating costs during a vehicle?s lifecycle, the system can be used in a wide range of vocational applications. Additionally, the labor time needed to replace the spin-on cartridge is less than five minutes compared with up to 30 minutes for other air dryers, said Meritor Wabco, and replacement cartridges typically cost less than competitive designs.

In addition, the company is introducing a new tagline: ?Safety Strong. Efficiency Smart.? According to Meritor Wabco, the phrase reflects the company?s ?proven performance in integrated safety technology and efficient air system solutions? and ?underscores the customers? dual needs to increase driver and highway safety while improving efficiency and cost of ownership.?

The company said these goals that can be accomplished through Meritor Wabco?s comprehensive product line of safety and efficiency products that includes brake systems, ABS and automatic traction control, stability control systems, collision safety systems and vehicle monitoring.

?Creating a new tagline for the Meritor WABCO brand was a way to demonstrate our focus on what?s next in commercial vehicle safety and efficiency,? said Morrison.  ?We took the lead four years ago when we launched OnGuard, and today we?re proving that we?re going to continue to break ground and deliver on the needs of our customers.?

Meritor Wabco is a North American joint venture focused on the development and delivery of integrated safety technology and efficiency components.  These include braking systems and controls, active safety systems, and suspension and control systems for commercial vehicles in North America. Two leading global suppliers back Meritor Wabco: Meritor, Inc., a supplier of drivetrain, mobility, braking and aftermarket solutions for commercial vehicle and industrial markets, provides the JV the industry?s most extensive service and support network while Wabco Automotive Control Systems, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Wabco Holdings, Inc. provides technologies and control systems for the safety and efficiency of commercial vehicles

           Great Dane overhauls product line

?The last two years have been filled with tremendous change for us as a nation and as a company,? said Bill Crown, Great Dane?s president & CEO. ?In addition to a turbulent global economy, our own corporate leadership team weathered an unexpected transition. Instead of allowing circumstances to determine our future, we accepted these challenges? by setting a new benchmark for quality.?

The product overhaul includes changes to its dry van, flatbed and refrigerated trailers, the company said:

Everest TL and Everest SS dry van trailers have been engineered to satisfy the long-haul truckload reefer market, with the Everest CL as a high-spec offering for grocery and multi-temp products. Champion SE dry van specs are now designed for heavy-duty productivity with fleets in mind; Champion CL is a versatile freight van that can be highly specified to meet various needs, while Champion CP boasts Great Dane?s proven composite panel technology. Freedom SE is a heavy-duty all-steel flatbed trailer with available straight, drop or extendable body styles, while the Freedom LT combination steel and aluminum trailer is exceptionally lightweight but built for performance; the versatile and ultra-lightweight Freedom XP flatbed is 1,000 lbs lighter than its combination counterpart.

Significant improvements to base model trailers include Great Dane?s all-new EnduroGuard? a reinforced, corrosion-resistant rear frame on dry vans designed for strength; along with all LED lamps with dual intensity lights and PunctureGuard as the standard lining on all refrigerated trailers.

Great Dane is even overhauling its iconic chrome Great Dane dog and red oval logo, adding a reflective background and polished chrome rim. All trailers, regardless of model, will now be adorned with a redesigned red wing plate, the company said, with the new red oval garnishing the rear doors of refrigerated and dry van trailers in lieu of a parallelogram.

The signature hand-written Great Dane font has also been replaced by a sleeker, more contemporary typeface, noted Dean Engelage, executive vp– sales & strategic planning.

?The needs of our customers in the trucking industry have evolved over that time just as our capabilities and technologies have,? he said. ?In response to those changing needs, we challenged our engineering and manufacturing groups to not only streamline our products but to incorporate the very latest high tech innovations into our base models.?
